Facial Sagging: What Has Helped Me Care for My Skin Over the Years by Elena Alarcón.

Facial Sagging? What Has Helped Me Care for My Skin Over the Years.

Facial sagging is one of those concerns many of us start to notice with time, although it does not always appear in the same way.

My face is very slim, and that means that, with age, I especially notice the loss of support in certain areas. I don’t feel that my facial oval is sagging, but I do notice my smile lines more, as well as the little wrinkles that appear when I smile. And honestly, my goal has never been to have no wrinkles.

Aesthetic treatments? Once a year I have a treatment that is not Botox — I like to laugh freely — nor hyaluronic acid, nor laser, nor radiofrequency.

If you want, I can tell you which one it is.

My goal is for my wrinkles to remain dynamic wrinkles; in other words, wrinkles that appear when I laugh but then disappear when my face returns to a relaxed position. Not deep, static lines caused by dehydration and lack of care. Ultimately: elastic, plump skin with a natural glow.

There are small habits that, for me, have made a real difference over the years. For example, drinking water on an empty stomach. An ophthalmologist recommended it to me years ago, and it worked wonders. That early hydration reaches tissues and systems when they need it most, and it helps much more than it may seem to keep the skin comfortable and elastic throughout the day.

Another important thing for me is controlling sugar — and I have to say, I have a very, very sweet tooth. Not out of obsession, but because excess sugar accelerates a process called glycation: sugar molecules bind to proteins such as collagen and elastin, damaging their structure. The result is skin that is less elastic, more rigid, and more prone to sagging. Remember that collagen loss affects the entire body, and it is especially noticeable in women’s skin and internal organs.

I can recommend the supplements I take as collagen precursors — yes, precursors. In other words, I do not take collagen itself.

I also avoid high-impact sports such as running. Personally, yoga, walking, moderate strength training, and low-impact exercises work much better for me. Muscle provides support, but repeated excessive impact may encourage sagging and oxidative stress in some tissues.

Sun protection, always. All year round. Even when it’s cloudy. UV radiation passes through clouds and is one of the main factors responsible for the degradation of collagen and elastin. If you want, I can recommend my favourite sunscreens. 💛

I also try to put difficult experiences into perspective. Not to live permanently on alert. Sustained stress increases cortisol, inflammation, and free radicals.

And yes, I use my own cosmetics. A lot. I have tried countless brands over the years, but with my formulas I feel at peace. I know exactly what they contain, why they contain it, and how they are formulated. Each ingredient is chosen with great care. I love their natural aromas because they don’t overwhelm me or cause rejection, and I notice a real difference in my skin.

And you? What do you feel truly helps your skin as the years go by?
