Fascinating Skin Facts You Were Never Told: Understanding How Your Skin Really Works.
Today I want to share some fascinating facts about your skin that were probably never explained to you.
Because skin is not simply "the outer layer" of your body. In fact, it is an organ—the largest organ in the human body and one of the most complex.
Every day we talk about wrinkles, pigmentation, hydration or radiance, but we rarely stop to think about everything that is happening inside our skin while you are reading this email.
For example... did you know that your skin has its own surveillance system?
Yes. Just as our body has immune cells that patrol and protect us, the skin has its own little "soldiers." One of the most well-known are the Langerhans cells, which live in the epidermis and are responsible for detecting potential threats, microorganisms and foreign substances before they can cause harm.
Your skin is constantly monitoring its surroundings. And that makes perfect sense, because it is the first line of defense between your body and the outside world.
Another fact I love explaining is that the outermost layer of the skin has its own name: the stratum corneum.
For years, we have been taught to imagine the skin as a sponge, but in reality it is much more like a wall. Scientists often describe it as a structure made of bricks and mortar. The bricks are cells called corneocytes. The mortar is made up of lipids such as ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids.
Its mission is simple but essential: to prevent water loss and stop irritants, pollutants and microorganisms from entering the skin. When this wall is strong, the skin feels comfortable, flexible and balanced.
When it becomes compromised, many familiar skin concerns begin to appear: sensitivity, dehydration, redness, irritation and even a greater tendency to develop pigmentation issues.
And here comes one of the questions I am asked most often: does skincare really penetrate the skin?
The answer is yes, but it depends greatly on the active ingredients involved.
Some cosmetic products are designed primarily to remain on the surface of the stratum corneum, hydrating, softening and protecting the skin.
Others contain active ingredients capable of interacting with deeper biological processes. For many years, the industry used the term "cosmeceutical" to describe these types of products. Of course, everything depends on concentration, formulation and the ability of the delivery system to transport the actives effectively.
Because even the most wonderful active ingredient, if poorly formulated, remains an underperforming ingredient.

And speaking of cells... did you know that your skin is constantly renewing itself?
New cells are born in the deepest layers of the epidermis and gradually move upwards until they reach the surface.
Traditionally, skin renewal is said to occur approximately every 28 days, although in reality this timing varies depending on age, genetics, sun exposure, stress, hormones and the overall condition of the skin. This is why real results take time. Skin follows its own biological rhythms and does not understand urgency.
Another fascinating fact: skin is not the same everywhere on the body.
The skin around the eyes can be several times thinner than other facial areas. It contains less lipid support, fewer sebaceous glands and has a different protective capacity.
That is why a product may feel perfectly comfortable on your cheeks and yet cause irritation around the eyes.
Something similar happens when patch-testing on the arm. How is it possible for a product not to irritate the inner wrist but still cause irritation on the face? Because facial skin lives a completely different reality.
Every day it is exposed to sunlight, wind, pollution, makeup, temperature changes, aggressive cleansers and constant facial movement. Its barrier is subjected to significantly more stress.
This brings us to another fascinating concept: the skin microbiota.
Your skin is home to millions of beneficial microorganisms that coexist with us, forming an extraordinarily intelligent and complex ecosystem. They are not there by chance.
They help maintain balance, defend against pathogenic microorganisms and work closely with our immune system.
When we over-cleanse, use overly aggressive products or constantly disrupt the skin's natural pH, we can disturb this microbiota. When that happens, the skin barrier often suffers.
